What's open to you — and the one door that won't reopen.

Medicare has a handful of windows, and a couple you only get one shot at. Tell us where you are and we'll map yours — what's open now, and what's worth not leaving to the last minute. Nothing here is a recommendation; it's the conversation an unbiased guide would walk you through.

Which sounds most like you right now?

You've got the picture. Now what?

A map shows you where the doors are. Whether to walk through one is a conversation, not a calculation.

    * State rules vary — some add Medigap rights beyond the federal ones, like a yearly or birthday-rule window or year-round guaranteed issue. Research your state's specific options, or ask Fern.

    Common questions about Medicare timing

When is my Medigap open enrollment window?

It's the six-month period that starts the month you're 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During it, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state at the best rate, with no health questions. It happens once and doesn't repeat.

What happens if I miss my Medigap window?

Outside that window (and outside specific guaranteed-issue situations), insurers in most states can review your health and charge you more or turn you down. A few states have more generous ongoing rules — the tool flags whether yours is one.

Can I still get a supplement after leaving Medicare Advantage?

Sometimes, yes — there's a 12-month trial right the first time you try Advantage, and some other guaranteed-issue situations. A closed window isn't always the end, which is exactly what this tool helps you check.

For the build team — verification & maintenance notes (remove before ship)

Refined reference build of Tool 1. Logic & copy are carried over verbatim from the verified prototype (CMS / Medicare.gov / SSA + Fact Log, June 2026). Rebuild in Astro with real Brevo + analytics + server-side validation; this file is the behavior + design spec.

Integration points (stubbed here — wire for real)

    • Keep a copy → Brevo. Primary lead-gen capture. // STUB in submitKeepCopy() — POST email + result payload to Brevo, tag into the lead-gen/nurture track (confirm tag with founder), ideally email the personalized result. Validate server-side too.
    • Meet Fern. #fernLink currently → /fern; confirm the canonical Fern member-page URL.
    • Community door: dropped per brief 3.4 (member-only; not usable by a non-member). Two clean CTAs left. Re-add only as a non-clickable teaser if the founder asks.
    • Analytics: track() stub fires — situation_selected, result_shown (situation+status), keep_copy_submitted, meet_fern_clicked. Wire to the chosen analytics convention.

Maintenance — the one config block

    • All time-stamped / changeable values live in ANNUAL (year label + per-state examples). Keep this pattern; tie it to the Fact Log. Tool 1 is almost entirely evergreen.
    • Pending: the per-state Medigap rights table is NOT built — handled by the asterisk → Fern footnote. Do not hardcode a state ruleset; plug a verified table into ANNUAL.extraProtectionStatesExamples when ready.

Calm-not-fear & a11y (preserved here, keep in Astro)

    • No gauges / alarm-red / countdowns / urgency theater. Even trap results read as steady caution. Status pills read in text, not color alone.
    • Real labels, keyboard-navigable, visible focus, ≥44px targets, aria-live result region with focus moved to the result heading, AA contrast.
